Your favourite film?
It has to be The Notebook, I am a sucker for old romances!
Your favourite international artist?
So many people spring to mind for this one, there are so many that have influnced my work but I have to say my favourite thing is Eighteenth Centry Sevres Porcelain. It has such a rich history and is so incredibly well crafted plus the designs are amazing!

You are so going to want to buy some of her work at Art + Design Week before she gets snapped up!!!

Tra la laaaa!!! Meet Ingrid Anderson and her fabulous range of textiles!

Inspired by a love of New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, founder and textile designer Ingrid Anderson is an environmental enthusiast. Ingrid trained as a screen printer and in 1998 she established Ingrid Anderson Textile Design.

Her passion for great design and textiles has developed into a flourishing boutique textile printing enterprise. Ingrid’s brother (Craig Anderson) and sister-in-law (Hanna Scott) came on board for the 2008-09 period providing capital along with sales and marketing expertise for the company. Now Ingrid employs a team of local professionals, enabling her to focus on creating new designs to expand the Ingrid Anderson textile range.

Using hand-cut paper techniques as an integral part of the design process, Ingrid Anderson designs are distinctive, graphic and full of intensity. The bold cut-paper design and glorious colour makes a striking hit in any room and the geometry of her patterns looks fantastic en mass. A popular choice for magazine stylists for their dramatic use of pure colour and modernist style, her  contemporary designs have featured widely in magazines and make popular gifts both locally and internationally.

We asked Ingrid some of her favourite things and this is what she had to say…

Where is your favourite place in New Zealand?
Raglan – little paradise of natural beauty and laid back fun. We have camped there every year with our family and friends and as you can see by the photo a great place for all age groups!

Who is your favourite Artist?

Marimekko would have to be my favourite design brand – clean stylish Scandanavian design created by an ever evolving group of designers from different parts of the world.

Closer to home – Ralph Hotere and Rita Angus the essence of NZ painting

Where is your favourite place to eat?
Ok Favourite place to eat is at home when my husband cooks a lovely meal for me accompanied with great wine and music.

Check out Union Design – Showcasing at the 1st NZ Art + Design Week 2010

Paula Coulthard and Sue Haldane are the designers behind the Union Design Range, combining their talents from other ventures the two women came together to craft statement furniture pieces that are beautifully made with a real concentration on quality made NZ design. Union Furniture is designed and manufactured in New Zealand. Each individual piece tells a story of New Zealand; stories of the people, stories of the workplace, stories of the land and sea. Furniture from the Union Collections are crafted from solid, sustainable timber; upholstered with luxurious and hardwearing textiles; embroidered by hand. Incorporating found and handmade materials into their new designs this range is sure to impress.

Paula Coulthard: has a fine art background. Her design label Coulthard is acknowleged for its sculptural and textural qualities and its intrinsic New Zealandness. Fine, yet robust, materials are crafted and hand-embroidered to produce couture clothes and homeware.

Sue Haldane has a theatre and furniture design background and is the other half of The Boiler Room who are another one of our fantastic line up of awesome design brands for this years show!

Because we have already asked The Boiler Room their Fav three questions we took the opportunity to get to know Paula.

Favourite International Artist…

Doug and Mike Starn, Twin artists who currently have an amazing work at The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in NYC, Called The Big Bambu.  A huge structure made from bamboo and nylon mountain climbing rope.

Favourite material to work with….
Vintage materials that have previously had another use such as old canvas tents, hemp stretcher beds, sails etc.  They usually have interesting stitching details or labels that we like to include in our furniture, and often inspire the direction of a piece.
Favourite movie…
‘Koyaanisqatsi’:  From the Hopi language means  ”Life out of Balance” A story entirely told in a visual and musical language.  Although it was made in 1982 it is still entirely relevant.

Timothy John – Furniture Designer extraordinare all the way from Whakatane

Timothy John grew up in a laid back sunny beach town in the Bay of Plenty and spent most of his free time on a surfboard. He then stowed the board away and spent a number of years in his twenties travelling and living overseas. He returned to New Zealand in 2007 with a clear passion for design and has since been immersed in intensive study and experimentation.

Inspired by the ‘art of furniture’, Tim is not governed by theory but by heart and imagination.  Materials and objects of interest initiate the design process. In some cases it dictates keeping true to the original nature of the material. In other cases the potential is extensive.

This is a little taster of some of Tim’s AMAZING furniture. MoAD is so proud to be showcasing the debut collection at NZ Art + Design Week!!

So what are some of your favourites Mr Timothy John?

Favourite Material to work with: Industrial materials. Taking raw materials which are beautiful in themselves and re-arranging them. I like challenging people’s perceptions of the everyday and the overlooked.

Favourite Film: Step Into Liquid. The documentary follows people from vastly contrasting walks of life and shows how surfing can bring them together. It doesn’t matter if you’re surfing tiny ripples on Lake Michigan or 20ft life threatening waves in Tahiti, the stoke is the same.

Favourite International Designer: Maarten Baas. I’m inspired by his bold and unconventional ideas. He combines unlikely materials through innovative techniques such as burning classic design pieces with a blow torch and hand moulding industrial clay into furniture.

Don’t miss this amazing new collection at Art + Design Week, make sure to subscribe to our blog so we can keep you up to date with all the amazing things coming up!!

Drum roll please… Introducing – Dave Beazley

Dave Beazley’s career began with a diploma in cabinetmaking from Whangarei Polytechnic in 2000. After being in the trade for two years Beazley enrolled in the Bachelor of Design degree at Unitec in Auckland – a tuition from which he graduated from in 2006.

Dave Beazley’s paintings are immediately attractive to the eye. His candy-coated pastel hues and soft colourings entice a viewer to look – their initial effect is comforting. From a distance these seemingly sinless paintings resemble a children’s book illustration through his palette and then his figures which, upon initial inspection automatically links them to the innocence of a child-like narrative. Upon closer scrutiny we will find their eccentric subjects – packed with eyeballs, insects and sinister plant forms. His intention is to beguile the viewer with wholesome reverie that has a melancholic narrative embedded within it – a feast for the visual sense that reverts between sweet and sour and back again.

Beazley brings some of his characters to life by transforming them into ‘life size’ soft sculptures being another form of practice which allows him to move between painting, sculpture and computer animation – bringing his delightful characters alive in various forms for our endless enjoyment.

David studied Bachelor of Design, majoring in Painting, Unitec, Auckland

We asked Dave to give us some of his favourite things and this is what he had to say…

Your favourite international artist?
Os Gemeos, are two Brazilian artist that are amazing! I love their use of colour and the scale that they work on.

Your favourite film?
Dead Man, it has a great story and even better cinematography.

Your favourite material to work with?
Oil paint, because it is such a vibrant medium.

The fabulous Ilse-Marie Erl – Jeweller showcasing at MoAD NZ Art + Design Week

Originally from Germany Ilse-Marie Erl immigrated to New Zealand in 1986. In 1999 she graduated with a Bachelor of Design from Unitec, School of Design & Visual Arts, Auckland.

Erl is a contemporary jewellery maker with knowledge of and interest in the wider arena of contemporary art. In particular she has been drawn to conceptual work that involves performance, documentation, site-specificity and social interaction with a concern for expanding parameters of contemporary jewellery practice.

Besides having established an active practice exhibiting nationally and internationally, Erl has been lecturing at Unitec, Department of Design & Visual Arts since 2001. Currently she is completing her Masters by Project at Unitec.

Erl’s work is inspired by her urban environment. Being a pakeha living in the world’s largest pacific city, she has established a curious liaison with concrete as a primary material for the construction of body adornment. This material and the forms Erl creates from its interaction with other substances, speak metaphorically about the ways she negotiates her physical and cultural environment. Her works pose questions around the perceptions of identity and beauty.

The combination of materials and form reflects Erl’s relationship with urban Aotearoa: the experiencing of the urban sprawl, the mixing and mingling of different peoples, the growing pressure on our natural and social environment and the challenges to culture and conventions.

Some of Ilse’s favourites:

Who is your favourite NZ artist/designer? Warwick Freeman, because I love his intelligence and aesthetic.

Favourite travel destination? South East Asia, because it is hot there, the people are friendly, the food is plain awesome, life is affordable and the culture is colourful and interesting.

Your favourite place to have coffee/tea? While at work the Latin Fiesta Lounge in Pt. Chev because it is close, they have organic coffe, a Latin flair, good food and very lovely staff. At weekends the corner cafe in Westmere (can’t remember the name) for its fabulous organic food, very good prices and great location.

Ilse Marie will be showcasing her incredible jewellery at NZ Art + Design Week this year!!

Da da da da!!!! The Boiler Room

THE BOILER ROOM brings together one of the finest collections of furniture and art sourced from New Zealand’s industrial and institutional past, rendered in timber, metal and glass and steeped in the care-worn patina of age. The Boiler Room offers unique large scale furniture, restored or redesigned with a modern aesthetic, alongside smaller pieces saved from obscurity and given fresh context in the modern home or workspace.

We asked Su and Gary from The Boiler Room what some of their favourites are:

Who is your favourite NZ artist/designer? Hmmmmmmm could it be the robot guy, Martin Horspool..he makes the robots out of all industrial old bits and pieces…a bit of a Boiler Room concept but in the intricate and miniature. Y’know the one that exhibits at Letham Gallery and he had a robot called Lola..

Favourite place to have tea? Best tea is made over a fire in our son Charlies tipi…Great to hang out in there…at Muriwai.

Favourite travel destination? Africa. Gary is South AFrican. Africa has energy…they have a style…and they have a rhythm…and this pic is of his Dads truck from when Gary was a young un. His Dad was a stonemason.

MoAD will be showcasing new pieces from The Boiler Rooms range as well as their Sister company Union Design. Stay posted to learn more about Union in upcoming posts!

Meet Cheryl Sills – Featured Jeweller in the MoAD Art + Design Week!!

Cheryl Sills works primarily with silver and modern materials such as silicone rubber and resin. Her fascination with combining traditional and modern materials started during her four-year degree course in Dundee, Scotland.

Cheryl is now based in Auckland and renting a work space at Workshop 6.

In her current work, Sills has taken a contemporary look at precious stones by handcrafting rubber stones and setting them in traditional style settings. In doing this, she hopes to question what makes a material precious. Can industrial materials, if crafted and manipulated to create a unique object, become beautiful and, in turn, valuable?

Cheryls’ work is amazing and is busy working towards a show at the Royal Jewellery Studio in Kingsland this Friday!! – so if you get the chance you should go and support her creative awesome-ness. Yes we want one of these!!!

Rebecca Snelling – Workroom Design at NZ Art + Design Week!!

Workroom Design was established in 2008 by father and daughter – Douglas Snelling and Rebecca Snelling.

Douglas is the implementer of Rebecca’s design concepts and together have a strong aesthetic as well as sensibility for materials. The Snelling family have an affinity for timber, in particular New Zealand natives, with the families roots being in rural Northland New Zealand the land of the infamous Kauri tree.

Douglas’ background is in farming he progressed into building houses as well as other practical projects. Rebecca is of fine arts training having a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Whitecliffe College of Art and Design. She maintains a binary creative practice explaining that her design is ingrained in her art practice and vice-versa.

Workroom design uses found material where ever possible and only sustainably farmed timbers. The pieces and hand produced in low quantities. The design aesthetic is clean and functional as well as a focus on compositional balance and materiality.

So what are some of Rebecca’s faves at the moment?

Who is your favourite NZ artist/designer?

Without sounding cliche this is a very hard question as I am from the fine art persuasion I look at numerous artists and in my design practice alot of designers. To narrow it down I will talk about who I like right now. I am fond of Yvonne Todd’s work, I have always been fond of her aesthetic sensibility it has a nostalgia mixed with bad taste and good taste at the same time. This work is from her latest exhibition.

I cannot answer this question with out mentioning Heather Straka’s work ‘The Asian’ I am still so impressed with it. Conceptually this work is so stimulating and dealing with comtemporary issues surrounding the creative sector such as plagiarism and mass production, she successfully makes this topic interesting.

Favourite travel destination?

I think that I am yet to discover this. I have been to quite a few popular destinations, Melbourne, Paris and London. I am yet to see NYC – I fear i may be a little over stimulated.  All and all I am quite happy close to home, I had a fantastic time recently on Great Barrier island – I do like simple with very little distraction – I really liked the hunter gather that came out in us…

Your favourite place to have coffee/tea?

We have lovely coffee at our new store Douglas + Bec. It is Supreme Coffee, drip filter made in a beautiful chemex coffee maker. We have been taught by the best at Supreme Coffee to make the drip filter to its full potential and it is so yummy – we also get to try all different beans – its really exciting. We serve it to customers as a wee gift.

Out and about I have to say Good One, Auckland Coffee Supreme head quarters – I’d be lying if I said anywhere else, the coffee is always perfect – I have adapted embarrassingly high standards.

Rebecca will be showcasing her stunning furniture and lighting range at NZ Art + Design Week.

Sensitive boyfriend has been cooking you breakfast and writing you poetry since 2008. Sb is a pillar of sensitivity in the community, and advocate sensitivity in personal relationships. I loiter on the intersection of Sensitive and Whimsical, and see what boyfriendly things come along. So far I’ve made cookies, pillow cases, clothing, ceramics, rubber stamps, care packages . . . you name it. Recent projects have included a breakfast-in-bed delivery service, a pop-up store and a book project of people writing about bad relationship experiences. I studied boyfriendship under Julia, Rebecca and Emelie.

So what does Sensitive Boyfriend like?

Introducing: Kate McIntyre – Ceramic Artist

Kate McIntyre is an Auckland-based Ceramicist who is currently making delicate forms that explore the translucent qualities of Bone China Porcelain.

Originally from Golden Bay in the South Island, a place renowned for its natural beauty, it is no wonder that the natural world is an important inspiration for her work.
In particular, her works are inspired by the repeating patterns found in nature.

Kate’s interest in the natural world stems not only from the beautiful forms and intricate patterns, but also from the efficient and economical use of material that form natural structures. She instills this philosophy into her practice and is able to recycle the off-cuts of clay to use in future works.

While Kate has worked in different mediums over the years, including printmaking, photography and sculpture, her focus on ceramics has been fairly recent. Graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Design from Unitec, where ceramics became her medium. An internship with renowned New Zealand Ceramicist Peter Collis in 2009 became her stepping stone and she now works part-time from Collis’ Studios in Auckland, where she continues to develop her ceramic practice.

We asked Kate a few questions…

Who is your favourite NZ artist/designer?
The Crystal Series by Jeweller Anna Wallis. I love the tiny geometric tiny structures she creates, very inspiring.

Favourite travel desitination?

A favourite weekend getaway is Te Arai Beach

Your favourite place to have coffee/tea?

Kingsland is my haunt…I love The Fridge, especially when I have time to linger over a coffee or two. Then its off to Atomic, just down the road for a fresh supply of coffee beans to take home.

Kate will be showcasing her range of beautiful ceramic wares at this years MoAD Art + Design Week and we know that she will not disappoint!

Introducing Martin Horspool – Robot Designer

Martin is one of the few people lucky enough to be able to visualise personalities hidden in disused household objects. The development of these personalities involves some grinding, drilling and riveting until a creation is formed from a pile of rusting parts.

The self confessed urban gypsy collects from curb sides, car boots, markets, scrap yards, antique shops, auction houses and has stock-piled a collection of components to make any magpie jealous.

Most robots contain recycled pieces from the 50′s and 60′s and he finds it important for people to recognize the individual components that make up each one.

His “Retrobots” exhibitions have been a big hit for all ages, with sell-out shows in 2008 and 2009. Martin is preparing a “Retrobots invade Tokyo” show for 2011 and with pieces of his art in London, Amsterdam, Berlin and New York, he is quickly taking over the world!

So, what are some of Martins favourite things?

Who is your favourite NZ artist/designer?    John Britten the motorbike designer. Revolutionary design and a very fast work of art.

Favourite travel destination?   I just took part in the Asakusa Samba Carnival in Tokyo, and I loved it.

Favourite Place to have coffee? Deus Ex Machina on Wellesley Street. Art, custom motorbikes and great coffee. What more can a man want for? The photo is part of an exhibition that I had there.

Introducing Richard Wiles – Carry Corp.

Trained as an architect in the UK, Richards’ interest range from architecture, to furniture and everything in between. He prides himself on having a keen eye for detail and ensuring that everything he produces is of the highest quality.

Based in Wellington, Richard formed Carrycorp as an offshoot of his design company Hohum, purely for one of his biggest passions, bags.

The business is based upon quality of design together with pure and simple detail. Carrycorp strives to look towards the future and always aims for a unique twist on products. Ongoing designs involve the use of industrial quality merino felt, butyl rubber and shortly a move into leather. These materials are the inspiration for the product, as the designs are driven by the possibilities of a material and what may be achieved with it.

As carrycorp develops. Richard intends to further hohum and its profile with various design related products and also some great architecture in between! This should keep him off the streets for a while.

MoAD asked Richard to share a few of his favourite things:

Your Favourite artist? Artist – Ashley Wood [a comic artist really]

Favourite place to eat? McCoys Bistro at The Tontine, England [an amazing old coaching inn close to where I grew up ]

Introducing: Daniel Rose – Photographer

Featured Photographer Daniel Rose completed a Diploma in Contemporary Photography at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, Rose then went on to study for a Bachelor of Design majoring in photography at Unitec, Auckland. He graduated with honours in 2006 and is currently working as an editorial and exhibiting photographer. Daniel is emerging as a portrait photographer of choice for several national magazines. He also taught photography part-time at Art Station in Ponsonby. Daniel currently resides in the southern town of Nelson and moves between NZ cities for work.

We asked Daniel a few of his Favourite things…

Favourite artist: Josephine Cachemaille. I own two of her paintings from her disaster series. This one is titled ‘P Lab’.  I like her dark humour, and raw New Zealand aesthetic.

Favourite place: The Free House. A true freehouse pub set in an old church – I have to admit I was oblivious to the existence of this building until it became a pub. Here they offer an endlessly changing menu of local and national craft beers. You’re also free to bring your own food, often from The Indian Cafe across the street (see below). Good vibes!

Favourite place to eat: In Nelson, it would be The Indian Cafe, best indian I’ve had, and very reasonably priced compared to the main centres. It’s dimly lit, which Is something I like in a restaurant.

Meet Daniel! Ahhhh yes, he loves a good coffee!
